Plaid Crochet Hat in DK – free pattern!

January 2, 2017 By Vicky Leave a Comment

Plaid crochet hat

Plaid crochet hat

To be fair this isn’t a proper pattern, it’s an adaptation of this pattern by Whistle and Ivy. I’ll keep it short and simple. If you need any advice please contact me.

Materials

  • 3.25 mm knitting needles
  • 4mm knitting needles (optional)
  • 4mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn in 3 colours, I used black, claret and lipstick in Stylecraft DK
  • Yarn needle to weave in ends

This Pattern is in US stitches

Method
1. Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 120 stitches, knit in 2 x 2 rib for 10 rows.

2. Cast off using your crochet hook or 4mm knitting needles.

3. Slip stitch the last stitch to the first, chain up and start the plaid stitch the first row might be a bit fiddley to get your hook in.

Find the video tutorial for plaid stitch here

4. Crochet plaid stitch for 22 rows, you can add or take away for more or less slouch.

5. Row 23 – (2dctog, 1dc) around.

6. Row 24 – 2dctog around.

7. Fasten off and weave in all ends securing them properly, leave one end to weave in the stitches from row 24 to close the hat.

8. Make a pompom from yarn or add a fur one of you wish.

All done! I hope this small guide helps you make a lovely hat in DK

Please like this pattern on my Ravelry store.

I’m now a published author!

November 23, 2016 By Vicky Leave a Comment

Of a crochet pattern, but hey it counts doesn’t it?

You can find the pattern for my Jack Skellington Tapestry Crochet Bag in my new Ravelry store here.  It’s free and it’s free to join Ravelry, so why not go and download it and have a go. If you need help there are links to videos in the pattern notes, and my previous post on tapestry crochet might help too!

At the moment the pattern is mostly for the more advanced crocheters, I will be writing up full instructions for the base at least as soon as I can.

Have fun folks!

I have a new crochet related obsession…

November 15, 2016 By Vicky Leave a Comment

to add to the list of all the other crochet things I’m obsessed with.

I’ve been admiring tapestry crochet bags for a while, they have colourful patterns and amazing designs. They originate (as far as I can see) from this group of Latin American people. Their work is amazing. So as I want to learn every crochet technique known to human kind, I decided to have a go.

Pinterest and youtube have lots of excellent resources for the methods of making the  bags and lots of great advice about them too.

This youtube playlist from All Tapestry Crochet is an excellent starting point for anyone wanting to have a go.

And Pinterest has *a lot* of image resources, this is just a few for example.

I’ve used this technique to design my own pattern, not in the traditional style but my own twist. I’m going to write it up and put it on Ravelry ASAP. I’ll post photos as soon as I have decided how I’m going to make the strap for it. I’m quite excited about it.

P.S. The base is the photo for this post.

Bunnies! Bunnies! It must be Bunnies…

March 25, 2016 By Vicky Leave a Comment

Or maybe midgets.

It’s that time of year Anyanka dreads. So in honour of the season, I’ve compiled a list of some of the nicest bunny patterns on the internets (mostly Ravelry). Here we go!

Rita the Rabbit, so very pretty, and a popular series by lalylala dolls.

Rabbit love pattern, again really cute, by may.

Robbie the Rabbit, I love this little guy so much. I’ve made him before, I’m a big fan of the Creepy Cute Crochet book.

Robbie Rabbit

Robbie Rabbit

Zombie bunny, does he eat brains or carrots?

Another Zombie bunny, still not sure what they’d eat.

Ralstyn the Rabbit, the detail is awesome.

Lola sweet little rabbit, aww so cute.

Amigurumi Rabbit, I’ve used this pattern before to adapt for a custom order. It’s very well written and cute!

Superbunny sat

Last but not least this genius idea, a bunny from a square.

My favorite bunny of all is the one I made for my brother.

Not so secret any more.

March 17, 2016 By Vicky Leave a Comment

I managed to finish the super secret project I was working on and have permission to show off my photos now.

It started as an idea by an MS society support group who bought a giant microbe and toured it around raising awareness for MS. So our local branch, Wakefield MS Society wanted to do something similar. Sourcing the microbe was a problem, the small ones were easy to get hold of but the larger versions were like hens teeth (hens don’t have teeth).

This is where I came in, they asked me if I would donate my time and make them a big version of the nerve cell. So I agreed and around 4 weeks worth of work later, 3 bags of stuffing, and 2 huge balls or Aran yarn, the nerve cell was finished. I measured and made it 5x the size of the original. It took some planning and some things were done and ripped back to get the correct shapes and proportions.

The little green thing is the microbe he’s based from.

So now he’s getting ready to tour round MS branches and raise money and awareness. I think there’s a book of his adventures to come too at some point down the line. I will keep you all posted about him and what he’s getting up to when the updates are published.

The Hardest Part of Learning to Crochet

November 24, 2015 By Vicky Leave a Comment

Crochet is awesome, well I think so anyway. I taught myself as I’ve mentioned before through YouTube and perseverance. It takes time to get it to look right, but once it clicks and you get the tension and the stitches the crochet world is your oyster.

I’ve been helping some ladies to learn patterns and to crochet from knowing nothing and I think I’ve stumbled onto t what the hardest part of learning is.

It’s…

*Pause for effect.*

Holding the yarn and your work in the proper hand in a comfortable way.

There are a lot of different techniques for holding your yarn, which helps get the correct tension in your work. When you start out crocheting this will be the oddest thing you have to do. I use an odd method as I have numb fingers so wrapping to yarn around them doesn’t work for me, I have to hold the working yarn in the palm of my hand and have it slip over my index finger. I hold my work with my thumb and middle finger. It might sound like I’m running the yarn loose, but I keep a pretty good tension with this method.

Are there any tips or techniques you’ve used to hold your working yarn? I’d love to hear how you hold it.

You’re all awesome.

It’s Been A While…

September 22, 2015 By Vicky Leave a Comment

I have an explination. My PC with all my photos and files was damaged whilst trying to unistall windows 10 and recover my previous version of windows.

It’s taken a little while to get everything recovered and installed again. I’ve got most of everything back now so I’ll be posting as frequently as I can and uploading photos of my recent works.

The Personal Project #1 – Part 2

August 11, 2015 By Vicky Leave a Comment

doctor scarf 2

doctor scarf 2

It’s getting there! I’m about 4 foot into the pattern now, I would be faster but I keep this for knit and natter groups. It’s a lovely relaxing pattern to do as well. I will weave in those ends when I’m done. Then I can use long cut offs to make the fringe with.

See part one here.

The Personal Project #1

August 8, 2015 By Vicky Leave a Comment

All work and no other crochet makes me a workaholic? Um, probably.

I’m currently working on a massive scarf for my daughter. It’s based on the one Tom Baker wears as the 4th Doctor Who. The pattern has been adapted by Oona Linnett to be a bit shorter than the original but still using the same colours. It’s a very easy pattern to follow and is perfect for knit a natter sessions, or watching something with subtitles. This is progress photo number one from the 21st of July.

The pattern can be found here, and the website about the scarf itself can be found here.

I’ll post more progress as I go.

Best crochet tips and tricks the internet have given us…

August 8, 2015 By Vicky Leave a Comment

So far! Oh, and some of my own too.

Crochet is a funny thing, people who do it are seen as magical creatures who make yarn into amazing things just from wiggling a funny looking stick around. It does take some practice to get going to start with, but it is very much worth the effort. It can quickly become a brilliant hobby / obsession and maybe if you’re brave enough a booming business (crosses everything).

The internet has some awesome tips to help make you a better crocheter. These are some of the ones I’ve found most useful.

  • The basics – The Crochet Crowd learn to crochet series This entire play list will help you get started if you’re just setting out. It’s how I learned. I’d recommend this or finding a local beginners class, you make lot of new friends that way too! (US terms used.)
  • Amigurumi – All about Ami posted this, that covers everything you need to know about making your amigurumi look great. It’s not something I’d suggest jumping into before you get the basics right, but once you gain confidence then go for it.
  • Safety eyes – I use a smallish washer to push down the back fastening of the eyes, saves your fingers and is quicker than fiddling with little bits of smooth plastic. A rubbery surface underneath stops the eyes from sliding around too.Washer and safety eye
  • Stitch markers – very useful to have, invest in some as soon as you can. They’re quite cheap to buy, but some are not very good quality, shop around. I use one on unfinished projects to keep the last stitch from accidentally being pulled out, trust me, it always happens on the complicated projects that you have to rip out to make sure you redo it correctly.Safety marker in loop of last stitch
  • Crochet terms are different – The UK crochet terms differ from the ones used by people in the US, I’m not sure how it varies in other countries, please tell me if you know. The conversion is important as it can make projects look very different. The easiest way to tell if your pattern is in US terms is if it has single crochet in it, usually abbreviated to sc. Here’s a chart from Mollie Makes magazine that shows you what the equivalent stitch is in the terms you use.
  • Find a local crochet group – Not only will you make lots of new friends, you’ll also get great advice from people who are as interested in crochet as you are.

There are many more tips to add, I shall do so soon.
